Five Children Were Inside Car During Deadly Garland Carjacking Attempt

Police said the driver who opened fire stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators.

GARLAND, Texas — A man was shot and killed Sunday afternoon after police said he tried to carjack a driver outside a Garland convenience store following a crash near State Highway 66 and Dairy Road.

Garland police said the case began about 3:30 p.m. after a green vehicle hit two other vehicles on the road. Investigators said the driver then stopped at a nearby gas station, tried to take several vehicles by force and later crossed Dairy Road before confronting a family in a white Chevrolet Impala.

Police said the Impala had an adult male driver, two adult women and five children inside when the suspect approached. A struggle followed between the suspect and the driver. During the fight, police said, the driver pulled out a handgun and shot the suspect at least once.

The suspect was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police described him as a Hispanic man but had not released his name as of Monday, pending notification of his family. No other injuries were reported in the crash, the attempted carjackings or the shooting.

Investigators said the suspect’s earlier attempts to take vehicles in the gas station parking lot failed. Police said he was seen checking car handles and got into one vehicle but did not drive away. He then moved across Dairy Road to the convenience store lot, where the Impala had pulled in.

The driver who shot the suspect remained at the scene, police said. Garland police said he has cooperated with investigators. No charges had been filed as of Monday, and police said the investigation remained open as detectives reviewed the crash, the attempted vehicle thefts and the fatal shooting.

The shooting left police markers around the Impala and drew investigators to the busy area near Highway 66 and Dairy Road. Officers were still working to confirm the suspect’s identity and complete reports on the chain of events that began with the crash and ended in the parking lot.

Police said the next step is completing the investigation and releasing the suspect’s name after relatives are notified.
