Father Detained After Gunpoint Abduction of Daughter from Mother

MEMPHIS, TN – A five-month-old baby girl has been safely reunited with her mother after being taken at gunpoint by her father early Thursday morning. The Memphis Police Department reported the incident occurred just before 1 a.m. in the 3600 block of Nearly Road, a short distance from where the child was eventually found.

The situation unfolded following a heated argument involving the child’s parents and other individuals, possibly family members and friends of the mother. During the altercation, the father, identified as Robert Avant, allegedly brandished a firearm, threatening those who attempted to intervene.

Authorities say Avant led the individuals to a nearby street, where he reportedly pointed a pink pistol at them. Police are still working to gather more details from those involved to piece together the events of the morning.

The search for the infant, Ammani Avant, and her father concluded successfully around 5 a.m. when officers located them in an unfinished home on Southland Drive. This location is only a short walk from the initial site of the incident.

As of now, no charges have been filed against Avant, but the investigation remains ongoing as police continue to consult with witnesses and gather evidence.

The Memphis Fire Department assessed the infant upon her recovery, confirming that she is in good health. Ammani has since been returned to her mother, who expressed immense relief over her daughter’s safe return.

The incident has drawn attention to the importance of swift police action in such cases, with local authorities praised for their rapid response and successful resolution.
