NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Police charged a 23-year-old man with multiple offenses after an alleged violent assault in Centennial Park on Thursday night. Authorities apprehended Justin Cunningham as he attempted to leave the scene near the Parthenon amidst apparent intoxication.
Officers responded to reports of a disturbance and found Cunningham showing clear signs of impairment, including slurred speech and bloodshot eyes. A strong smell of alcohol was noticeable, and he struggled to maintain his balance, prompting officers to take him into custody.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene as they observed Cunningham approach the victim. According to the police report, Cunningham aggressively demanded that the man play music from his phone. When the victim declined, Cunningham’s demeanor shifted, culminating in an unexpected physical assault.
The victim recounted Cunningham’s return to the scene, where he began delivering a barrage of punches, kicks, and knees to his ribs. Witnesses corroborated this account, stating they heard the victim calling for help as Cunningham allegedly slammed his head against the concrete multiple times.
Emergency medical responders arrived shortly after, tending to the victim, who was covered in blood. As he was being loaded into an ambulance, Cunningham reportedly issued threats against both the victim and the responding officers, asserting ties to organized crime and claiming he would have a “hit” placed on them.
Despite an attempted kick directed at officers during the arrest, they were ultimately able to secure Cunningham in a patrol car. He has been charged with aggravated assault, resisting arrest, public intoxication, and making threats. His bond has been set at $256,100.
