STONINGTON, CT – A family outing took a terrifying turn when a driver allegedly targeted them with his car on Mason’s Island Road. Onlookers watched in shock as the incident unfolded, captured by newly released dash cam footage.
The situation began on August 30 when Stonington police received a distress call. A man had reportedly reversed his vehicle into a family walking peacefully in Mystic. Identified as 75-year-old Windalle Hizel, the driver allegedly ignored the family’s plea to slow down, resulting in the injury of a young man.
When approached by officers, Hizel initially appeared cooperative. However, the situation quickly deteriorated. Dash cam footage shows Hizel swerving toward the family once more, ultimately crashing into a wall.
Hizel was arrested on Glead Hill Avenue after exiting his vehicle. He now faces serious charges, including first-degree assault. The family, fortunately, escaped with only minor injuries.
The incident has left the community in shock, with many calling for improved road safety measures. Residents are expressing concerns over the potential dangers posed by reckless drivers.
Hizel, now out on bond, is set to appear in court on September 10. The case highlights the critical need for vigilance and responsibility on the roads.
