A suspicious person call ended with an officer stabbed and a suspect critically injured.
DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — State investigators were expected to take over a DeKalb County police scene Monday after an officer was stabbed and a suspect was shot near North Decatur Road and DeKalb Industrial Way, authorities said.
The officer was stable at Grady Memorial Hospital with a moderate injury after being stabbed once, police said. The suspect was reported in critical condition after police corrected an earlier statement that said the suspect had died.
The call began Monday morning as a report of a suspicious person in the area. Police said the suspect stabbed the officer during the encounter. The department had not released the names of the people involved or said how many officers responded before the shooting.
The investigation caused a major traffic shutdown at North Decatur Road and DeKalb Industrial Way. The intersection sits in a heavily traveled part of DeKalb County, where commuters, medical patients and local workers move through the corridor during the morning rush.
Police said at 9:15 a.m. that the suspect had died. About 30 minutes later, the agency issued a correction and said the suspect had not died and was in critical condition. The officer’s injuries were described as moderate, and no other injuries were reported in the first public updates.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was expected to handle the scene as part of the officer-involved shooting review. Investigators are expected to document evidence, interview witnesses and examine the actions that led from the suspicious person call to the stabbing and shooting.
Authorities had not said whether the suspect would face charges if the person survives. Police also had not released a timeline for reopening the road or for providing more details about the officer’s condition.
The scene remained active late Monday morning, with police presence still affecting traffic in the area. The next major update is expected after state investigators review the initial evidence.
