Police said twin boys and their father died in a suspected murder-suicide.
LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Twin boys and their father died Sunday evening in a shooting at a Canoga Park residence, where Los Angeles police said a family gathering turned into a suspected murder-suicide.
The shooting was reported about 7:15 p.m. in the 8000 block of Owensmouth Avenue, near Lanark Park. LAPD said officers and firefighters found three people with fatal gunshot wounds and no other injured victims at the scene.
Police said the boys’ mother heard two shots from another room and went to check on her children. Investigators said the father then pointed a handgun at her. She was not struck. Police said he shot himself moments later.
Family members told local reporters the children were 10-year-old twins and that the shooting happened during their mother’s birthday gathering. LAPD had not publicly confirmed all family relationships by early Monday, and the medical examiner had not released the victims’ names.
The home sits across from Lanark Park in a residential part of the west San Fernando Valley. Neighbors described a sudden police response as officers blocked off the area and moved some residents away from nearby apartments during the early investigation.
Detectives are reviewing witness statements and evidence from inside the home. LAPD said the motive remains unknown. Officials have not said whether the gun was legally owned, whether there was a prior threat or whether investigators recovered any written message.
The case now moves through a death investigation led by LAPD homicide detectives and the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner. The next public update is expected after the victims are identified and autopsies are completed.
