Police said the suspect, her former partner, was later found dead in South Carolina.
UPPER MARLBORO, Md. — A 29-year-old Upper Marlboro woman died Thursday after police said she was shot multiple times Tuesday morning in a driveway on Birdie Lane by a former partner later found dead in South Carolina.
Prince George’s County police identified the woman as Kayla Richardson. The shooting happened about 7:15 a.m. in the 10400 block of Birdie Lane. Police said detectives identified 30-year-old Dante Morris of Fort Mill, South Carolina, as the suspect during a preliminary investigation.
Richardson was found outside the home and taken to a hospital in critical condition. Doorbell camera video captured about eight gunshots, and a dispatcher described a head wound during a 911 call. Evidence markers were later visible in the driveway, including near shell casings.
Police said Morris and Richardson had previously been in a relationship. Detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Morris, but authorities said he drove back to South Carolina after the shooting and was found dead at his home Tuesday evening. A Prince George’s County police spokesperson said authorities believe Morris died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Neighbors described the Somerset Square community as quiet and said violence there was rare. One longtime resident said she had lived in the neighborhood for 31 years and could not recall a similar incident. Another neighbor said the sound of gunfire and the sight of police tape were deeply unusual for the block.
Neighbors said Richardson grew up in the neighborhood and had returned from South Carolina while her mother was being treated for cancer. “It’s a big loss, and it’s a tragic loss, and it’s a waste of life,” one neighbor said. Richardson’s family declined to comment Thursday.
Police said they were assisted by the York County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team, its Crisis Negotiator Unit and the U.S. Marshals Service Carolinas Regional Fugitive Task Force. The investigation remains active as detectives continue reviewing evidence and witness accounts.
