Police said one man was critically wounded and a suspect was detained.
HOUSTON, Texas — Houston police are investigating a deadly shooting early Sunday at a family crawfish boil in northeast Houston that left one man dead and another critically injured.
Officers were called about 1:30 a.m. to the 7700 block of Bretshire Drive, where police said an argument between a suspect and two adult men turned violent. The shooting changed a family gathering into a homicide investigation before sunrise.
Investigators said both victims had been attending the gathering when the altercation began. Police said the suspect opened fire, striking one man in the chest and the other in the neck and chest. One victim died at the scene, behind a vehicle parked in front of the home. A woman drove the second victim to a local hospital, where police said he remained in critical condition.
Houston police said one of the victims was 22 years old. The other victim had not been identified in the first public update. Officials did not release the name of the suspect or say whether charges had been filed. Police said the motive for the argument remained unknown.
The shooting happened during a crawfish boil and family gathering, police said. No other injuries were reported in the initial account. Investigators detained a suspect at the scene and continued reviewing what led to the gunfire.
The case is being handled as a homicide investigation. Detectives are expected to review witness statements, physical evidence from Bretshire Drive and medical updates from the hospital as they decide what charges may follow.
The scene remained centered on the home where the gathering took place and the vehicle near where one victim was found. Police said the surviving victim was still in critical condition as the investigation continued Sunday.
