Deadly Love Triangle? Spring Shooting Leaves Woman, Man Dead

Authorities say one death has led to charges while another remains under review.

SPRING, Texas — Harris County investigators are preparing to send part of a deadly Spring-area apartment shooting to a grand jury after charging a man in one of the two deaths, officials said.

The shooting killed Junior Ruiz, 22, and Estelle Camarillo, 34, early Sunday at an apartment complex along FM 2920 near Ella. Adrian Abreu, 32, has been charged with manslaughter in Camarillo’s death and with unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon. Deputies said the decision on any charge tied to Ruiz’s death will be left to a grand jury.

The case began when a woman at the complex called a friend and said she was afraid of a man outside her apartment because of previous alleged abuse, deputies said. Investigators later identified Ruiz as the man the caller feared. Authorities said Abreu arrived with Camarillo, who was in a dating relationship with him. A confrontation turned physical, and investigators said Abreu told them he shot at Ruiz during the fight. Deputies said Ruiz and Camarillo were both struck by gunfire.

Deputies found the two victims with gunshot wounds and said both were pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators have not said whether Camarillo was the intended target. They also have not released the name of the woman who made the first call, the exact location of the shooting inside the complex or whether any other people were inside the apartment when shots were fired. Officials said the people involved knew one another, but they have released only limited details about the relationships.

The charges announced Monday marked a shift from the first hours after the shooting, when deputies said the shooter had been detained and prosecutors would decide whether charges were warranted. Abreu was later booked into the Harris County Jail. Court records show he had a prior deferred sentence for unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. As part of that case, he had been ordered to forfeit weapons, according to court information.

The legal review now has two tracks. The manslaughter case focuses on Camarillo’s death, while evidence connected to Ruiz’s death is expected to go before a grand jury. A manslaughter conviction in Texas can carry a prison sentence of up to 20 years. Abreu was also charged with being a felon in possession of a weapon, a charge tied to his legal status before Sunday’s shooting. Early court records did not list an attorney for him.

The shooting happened before sunrise at a residential complex in the Spring area, north of Houston. Deputies and constables responded to a scene that began as a disturbance call and became a double death investigation. Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said the investigation was continuing as detectives worked through witness statements, court records and physical evidence from the apartment complex.

Abreu’s next court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday. The grand jury review of Ruiz’s death remains pending, and investigators have not announced a timeline for when that review will be completed.
