Civil Rights Leaders Demand Transparency After Off-Duty ICE Agent Fatally Shoots Man Celebrating New Year’s Eve

Los Angeles, California—Civil rights advocates are demanding an independent investigation into the fatal shooting of Keith Porter Jr. by an off-duty Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent during New Year’s Eve celebrations. The incident, which took place at an apartment complex, has raised serious concerns regarding the justification of the agent’s actions.

Najee Ali, a prominent figure with Project Islamic Hope, asserted that Porter was unjustly shot by an agent whose behavior he described as overly aggressive. “The Department of Homeland Security’s claim that Porter was an ‘active shooter’ is not only misleading but entirely false,” Ali stated. He referenced eyewitness accounts indicating that Porter was discharging a rifle into the air to ring in the new year, rather than aiming at anyone.

According to Ali, multiple witnesses are prepared to share their accounts, contradicting the narrative put forth by federal officials. He urged the California Attorney General to spearhead a thorough investigation and called for the immediate release of body camera footage, ballistic evidence, and any witness statements related to the incident.

Responding to reports of gunfire in the area, officers were dispatched to the 17701 block of Roscoe Boulevard shortly before midnight. Upon arrival, they learned that an off-duty ICE officer had engaged in gunfire with Porter, who has been identified as the victim. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security characterized the circumstances as an “active shooter situation,” detailing that the agent acted to defend himself and others.

“I thought it was fireworks at first; there were so many shots,” an eyewitness recounted. “It was more than ten shots, and we all got frightened.” Tragically, Porter was pronounced dead at the scene following the shooting.

In the aftermath of the incident, the off-duty officer alerted the LAPD, which has since opened an investigation into the shooting. However, details regarding the identity of the victim and the specific events leading up to the shooting remain undisclosed. The LAPD has indicated that further updates will follow as the inquiry unfolds.

The call for accountability and transparency has intensified in the wake of this incident, with advocates emphasizing the need for a comprehensive review to address concerns about police and federal conduct in such volatile situations. As the community grapples with the tragic outcome, the push for an objective investigation appears to be gaining momentum.
