Chicago Driver Killed While Calling His Mother for Help

Treyhon McCurdy, 20, was one of two men killed after a car crashed into a tree in West Pullman.

CHICAGO, Ill. — A 20-year-old driver was shot and killed Sunday night in Chicago’s West Pullman neighborhood while on the phone with his mother, who said she heard gunfire before the call ended.

Treyhon McCurdy was one of two people found shot after a black sedan crashed into a tree in the 12100 block of South Harvard Avenue. Police said the shooting happened about 10:09 p.m. The case remains under investigation, and the second victim had not been publicly identified.

Alicia Warford said her son called her as the shooting unfolded. “Ma! Ma! They shooting at me!” Warford said McCurdy told her. She said she urged him to drive toward Altgeld Gardens, asking whether he could make it there. McCurdy answered that he thought he could. Moments later, Warford said, her son told her he loved her. Then the phone went dead.

Police said McCurdy was driving the sedan when it struck the tree. He had multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead. The passenger also had gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not said who fired the shots or whether any suspects have been identified.

Relatives said McCurdy had gone to meet people he did not know before the shooting. His sister, Candance McCurdy, said the person in the car with him also was not known to him. She said the family believes the meeting went wrong, though police have not confirmed a motive. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled McCurdy’s death a homicide caused by multiple gunshot wounds.

The crash and shooting left relatives searching for answers on the Far South Side. Warford said she got into her car after the call ended and drove through the area, screaming and trying to find her son. She later learned he had been lying near the crash scene. Family members said they are planning a vigil Saturday as they wait for more information from investigators.

The investigation remained open Thursday. Police had not announced arrests, and officials had not released the passenger’s name. The next public step is expected to come from police or the medical examiner as detectives review evidence from the scene.
