Police said two children were later found safe with relatives.
JACKSON, Miss. — A 43-year-old man was killed Tuesday in Jackson’s Presidential Hills neighborhood after police said a domestic dispute turned into a fatal shooting on Abraham Lincoln Drive.
Hinds County officials identified the man killed as Jason Johnson. Jackson police said officers were called about 1:45 p.m. to the 6000 block of Abraham Lincoln Drive. Police Chief RaShall Brackney said the suspect and victim were part of a family conflict that escalated before shots were fired.
Johnson suffered multiple gunshot wounds to his torso and upper body, Brackney said. Investigators believe the suspect used a high-powered rifle. Police did not release the number of shots fired or say whether shell casings or other evidence had been recovered from the scene.
After the shooting, police said the suspect drove away with his girlfriend and two small children. Brackney said officers later recovered the vehicle and made contact with relatives. “We now have made contact with the family and the children to make sure they are safe,” Brackney said. Police said the children were placed with a family member.
The suspect had not been publicly identified by full name. Police said he is known as “D.J.” or “Twin” and should be considered armed and dangerous. Officials did not say whether he remained in Jackson, whether he had contacted police or whether investigators had named a specific motive beyond the family dispute.
The shooting happened in a residential section of Presidential Hills, a west Jackson neighborhood where streets carry presidential names. Police and the coroner’s office responded after the shooting was reported. Officials did not announce any danger to nearby schools or businesses, and no additional victims were reported.
The case is now being handled as a homicide investigation. Detectives are expected to gather witness statements, review physical evidence and determine what charges may be presented after the suspect is found. Police have not said whether an arrest warrant has been issued.
The killing came days after Jackson police investigated another deadly shooting at Leavell Woods Park. In that case, police said 18-year-old Justin Body died after a Saturday night shooting during a large gathering, and 19-year-old Ladarius Evans was charged with murder and tampering with evidence. Police have not linked that case to Johnson’s death.
As of Wednesday, April 29, Johnson’s death remained under investigation and the suspect remained wanted. Jackson police said the next step is locating the man known as “D.J.” or “Twin” and determining what charges will follow.
