TAMPA, Fla. — A morning hazardous materials incident in the Temple Crest neighborhood triggered evacuations and drew a significant response from emergency services on Monday. Firefighters were dispatched to a residence on South Covina Circle, an area situated south of Busch Boulevard and east of North 40th Street.
According to fire officials, the situation unfolded when an individual allegedly combined various caustic chemicals, resulting in a chemical reaction that produced a minor explosion. The blast damaged the roof of the single-story home and released noxious fumes throughout the property.
Tampa Fire Rescue’s Hazardous Materials Team, along with the Tampa Police Department’s Bomb Squad, arrived to contain the situation and assess the dangers posed by the chemicals involved. Out of an abundance of caution, nearby residents were evacuated temporarily while crews worked on the scene.
Residents were permitted to return home around 1 p.m. after the situation was deemed safe. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries from the explosion. However, two people at the scene requested medical evaluations but chose not to be transported to a hospital.
Multiple agencies, including the Florida Division of Emergency Management and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, provided assistance in the response to the incident. The Florida Bureau of Fire, Arson, and Explosives Investigations also joined the effort to ensure public safety.
