The 14-year-old was wounded while sitting in a parked car in Soundview.
BRONX, N.Y. — Police searched Thursday for a gunman accused of shooting a 14-year-old boy as the teen sat in a parked car near the Soundview Houses while heading to school Wednesday morning.
The shooting happened about 7:30 a.m. near Seward and Rosedale avenues, police said. The boy was struck in the left thigh and taken to Jacobi Medical Center, where he was listed in stable condition. No arrest had been announced by Thursday.
The NYPD said the suspect walked up to the parked car and fired several rounds. Investigators said the boy was not alone in the vehicle, but police did not release the names or ages of the others inside. A police spokesperson said the gunman fled north on Rosedale Avenue after the shooting. The attack unfolded during the morning rush, as students and families were moving through the Soundview neighborhood.
Police released an image of the person sought in the case and described him as a man with a dark complexion who was last seen wearing a black sweater and black T-shirt. Investigators had not said what led up to the shooting, whether the teen knew the gunman or whether any words were exchanged before shots were fired. Law enforcement sources described the attack as apparently targeted, but police had not publicly listed a motive.
The shooting drew attention because of where and when it happened. The Soundview Houses are a NYCHA development in the southeastern Bronx, close to schools, bus stops and major neighborhood streets. The gunfire also came as the city has faced renewed concern about violence involving teenagers, including recent shootings that left other young victims seriously hurt or dead.
Detectives were expected to review surveillance video from the area and speak with witnesses who may have seen the suspect before or after the shooting. Police had not announced charges Thursday because the suspect remained at large. The case remained under investigation by the NYPD.
Residents near Seward and Rosedale avenues saw police activity after the shooting as officers searched the area and gathered evidence. The morning timing added to fear among families who were starting the school day. Police said the victim survived and remained stable at the hospital, but they did not release his name because he is a minor.
The search continued Thursday, with investigators asking for information about the suspect’s identity and movements after he fled north on Rosedale Avenue.
