Boy, 16, Fatally Shot in Broad Daylight Near Langley Park Playground

Angel Guzman, 16, was found outside the Langley Park Community Center.

HYATTSVILLE, Md. — Homicide detectives are investigating after a teenage boy was found fatally shot Friday afternoon near the playground outside Langley Park Community Center, police said.

The victim was identified by FOX 5 as 16-year-old Angel Guzman. Police said officers were called to the community center area around 1:30 p.m. and found the boy near a bench with an upper body wound. He died at the scene.

The shooting happened in a busy part of Langley Park, near 15th Avenue and close to Langley Park-McCormick Elementary School. The area includes a playground and open space used by children and families. Police blocked off the scene after the shooting as investigators searched the grounds and kept the public away from the center.

Maryland-National Capital Park Police initially handled the scene before the Prince George’s County Police Department Homicide Unit took over. Officials had not released a suspect description by Friday evening. A source close to the case told FOX 5 that several teens, including at least four people, were in custody as persons of interest.

Police had not said Saturday whether the teens were still being questioned, whether any of them would face charges or what led to the shooting. Authorities also had not released details about a firearm, possible surveillance video or the number of shots fired.

The death adds another homicide investigation to Prince George’s County, where detectives are now working to piece together the final moments before Guzman was shot. The location raised concern because the shooting happened outside a public community center and near a school property.

As of Saturday, June 27, the case remained open and police had not announced an arrest or a motive.
