Prince George’s County police said the suspect called 911 after the shooting and turned himself in.
OXON HILL, Md. — A Virginia man was shot and killed late Thursday near MGM National Harbor after an argument in a parking garage exit line, Prince George’s County police said.
Police identified the victim as Christopher Austin Jr., 33, of Alexandria, Virginia. The suspect, Tyrell Hairston, 36, of Accokeek, Maryland, is in custody after police said he called 911 shortly after the shooting and turned himself in. Investigators described the case as an apparent road rage shooting.
Officers responded about 11:10 p.m. Thursday to the area of Monument Avenue and MGM National Avenue for a reported crash. They found Austin inside a Slingshot autocycle with multiple gunshot wounds. Police said Austin died at the scene after the three-wheeled vehicle crashed near the casino property.
Investigators said Austin and Hairston had both been in line to leave the MGM National Harbor Hotel and Casino parking garage. Police said Hairston initiated an argument, got out of his vehicle, walked up to Austin’s autocycle and shot him. Austin then drove away before crashing nearby, according to the preliminary investigation.
Police said there was no indication Austin and Hairston knew each other before the encounter. Roads in the area were closed while officers investigated, and a firetruck was seen washing down Monument Avenue, which runs along the casino near the Capital Beltway.
Hairston was being held by county authorities as homicide detectives continued to review the shooting. Police had not announced a court date or detailed charging information in the initial reports. Detectives were still seeking information from anyone who saw the argument, the shooting or the crash.
The shooting happened near one of the region’s largest casino and entertainment sites, a busy area that draws drivers from Maryland, Virginia and Washington. Police said the known evidence points to a sudden dispute in the garage exit line, not a prior relationship between the two men.
The investigation remained active Friday, with Hairston in custody and Austin’s death under review by Prince George’s County homicide detectives.
