Tiffany Chapman suffered severe injuries when a vehicle struck her and another person outside a business on Crowley Road.
FORT WORTH, Texas — A woman seriously injured when a vehicle struck two people in south Fort Worth is facing a difficult recovery after suffering broken legs and significant chest injuries in a crash that led to the arrest of a 22-year-old man, according to police and the woman’s account.
Tiffany Chapman, 48, and Dione Gusman, 32, were taken to a hospital in serious condition after officers responded at about 12:40 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, to the 5700 block of Crowley Road. Fort Worth police said Yoriel Cabrera, 22, was detained after trying to leave the scene. Authorities later charged him with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and intoxication assault with a vehicle causing serious bodily injury.
Chapman described extensive injuries during an interview from her hospital bed. She said both of her legs were broken and that she suffered a punctured and collapsed lung. She also underwent surgery and said doctors placed plates and screws in her right knee. The injuries have left her uncertain about whether she will regain her previous mobility.
Chapman said she had been outside a pool hall with friends before the crash. She told FOX 4 that the group noticed Cabrera stumbling as he moved toward his vehicle. A short time later, she heard tires screech and saw headlights coming toward her. Chapman said she remembers hitting the ground and feeling severe pain after the impact.
According to Chapman, Gusman was thrown about 20 feet and lost consciousness. Police said both victims were hospitalized in serious condition. Authorities had not released additional details about Gusman’s injuries in the reports available Tuesday.
The circumstances immediately before the collision remain under investigation. Police said Cabrera had visible injuries when he was booked into the Tarrant County Jail. His booking photograph showed blood on his face, but authorities have not said that those injuries were caused by the crash. Police said Cabrera reported that he had been injured by people he was playing pool with before the collision.
Chapman said the crash has left her worried about how completely her legs will heal and whether she will walk normally again. She also said she had forgiven Cabrera personally while still wanting the criminal case to proceed through the justice system.
Cabrera was released from the Tarrant County Jail after posting bond on Sept. 21, according to court information cited by FOX 4. The charges are allegations, and the available reports did not indicate that the case had been resolved. An arrest affidavit providing additional detail about the police investigation had not been obtained by FOX 4 when its report was published.
The investigation and criminal case remain pending as Chapman continues treatment for her injuries. Police have not publicly released a final account of the events leading to the vehicle striking Chapman and Gusman.
