The chase ended near Maravillas Street and Desierto Bueno Avenue after authorities searched for a pickup that left a fatal shooting scene.
HORIZON CITY, Texas — A police pursuit that began after a fatal shooting investigation in East El Paso crossed the area Monday before ending in a Horizon City neighborhood, where authorities took a 40-year-old man into custody.
The pursuit was part of a broader law enforcement response that began after a 32-year-old man was shot and killed early Sept. 21 in the 1700 block of Charlie Smith Drive. El Paso police said a person associated with the investigation left the shooting scene in a Dodge pickup, prompting an alert to other agencies.
An El Paso police officer later spotted the truck in Central El Paso, police said. A pursuit followed and involved troopers with the Texas Department of Public Safety. The chase eventually moved into the Horizon City area and ended around 10:30 a.m. near Maravillas Street and Desierto Bueno Avenue.
Horizon City police advised motorists to avoid the neighborhood while officers responded. The location is near Ricardo Estrada Middle School, according to local authorities. Officials did not report that the school was involved in the incident.
Video from the end of the pursuit showed a pickup on its side in the neighborhood. Authorities took the man into custody after the chase, but police had not released his name as of Tuesday morning. El Paso police also had not announced charges against him.
The chase followed several hours of investigative work in East El Paso. Officers had responded shortly after 6 a.m. to reports of a shooting on Charlie Smith Drive, where they found a 32-year-old man dead. Police described the shooting as family-related but have not explained the relationship between the victim and the detained man.
The Texas Department of Public Safety assisted in the detention, while officers from multiple jurisdictions responded as the incident moved from El Paso toward Horizon City. The episode temporarily created separate law enforcement scenes: one at the site of the fatal shooting and another where the pursuit ended.
Authorities have not released the victim’s identity, a possible motive or a detailed account of what led to the shooting. Police also have not provided a complete account of the pursuit, including the exact route taken or circumstances that caused the pickup to end up on its side.
El Paso police continue to investigate the death as a murder. Additional information about possible charges, the identities of those involved and the circumstances of both the shooting and pursuit had not been released.
