Officers heard a gunshot after reaching a Girard apartment building, where investigators later recovered a firearm and found a mortally wounded woman.
PHILADELPHIA — Philadelphia police responding to a reported apartment break-in early Tuesday heard a gunshot from a first-floor unit, beginning a homicide investigation that left one woman dead and several key questions unanswered, authorities said.
Officers were dispatched around 3 a.m. to an apartment building on the 1500 block of Girard after a report of a break-in. Police said the officers heard a shot from inside a first-floor apartment after arriving at the property.
Investigators determined that a woman in her 50s had been shot in the chest through a steel door that led to the hallway. She was taken to Temple University Hospital and died around 3:30 a.m., about half an hour after police were initially called to the building.
The unusual sequence of events placed the initial break-in report at the center of the investigation. Police had not explained Tuesday morning what prompted that call, whether officers encountered signs of a forced entry or what connection, if any, the reported break-in had to the fatal shooting.
Chief Inspector Scott Small said officers recovered a semiautomatic firearm. Police had not publicly said where the weapon was located or whether testing had linked it to the shot that killed the woman.
A second woman, also in her 50s, was inside the apartment and was cooperating with investigators, according to police. Authorities had not released her name or described her relationship to the victim. Police had not announced any arrest or identified anyone as a suspect in the killing.
Detectives were also working to determine who fired the shot and why. The fact that the victim was struck through a steel door raised questions about where the shooter and victim were positioned, but authorities had not released additional findings about the trajectory of the gunfire or the movements of those inside the building.
The victim’s identity had not been released pending further investigation and notification procedures. Police also had not provided a possible suspect description or announced a motive as of Tuesday morning.
The homicide investigation remained open, with detectives examining the recovered firearm, the circumstances of the reported break-in and information from the woman who was inside the apartment. No arrests had been made.
