Wilson, N.C. — In a stunning display of athletic prowess, Ashleigh Gardner, a senior pitcher for C.B. Aycock, significantly contributed to her team’s dominant 28-4 victory over Hunt in Thursday’s 3-A Quad County Conference softball game. Gardner not only secured a win in her three innings on the mound but also had a standout performance at the plate, achieving a career-high nine RBIs which included belting an inside-the-park home run and two doubles.
The game, characterized by C.B. Aycock’s overpowering offense, saw the Golden Falcons improve their season record to 9-10, including a 7-4 mark in Quad County Conference play. This victory was a crucial turnaround from a recent four-game losing streak, highlighted by a commanding 22-7 win against Fike just two days earlier.
Conversely, the Hunt Warriors faced another tough outing, following an 18-5 defeat to SouthWest Edgecombe the day before. This loss brings their season record to 5-13 overall and 4-7 in the conference, a disappointing precursor to their Easter break. They are scheduled to return to action with an April 29 game against conference leader South Johnston.
From the start, Gardner made her presence felt. In the top of the first inning, after the first three Aycock batters reached base, Gardner cleared the bases with a decisive double that set the tone for the remaining game. The Falcons’ lineup followed suit, with a majority securing hits, including significant doubles from Brooklyn Davis and a triple from Ryleigh Tortual. Melaina Dixon of Hunt took over pitching duties only to face a rigorous offensive from Gardner, whose line drive turned into a three-run inside-the-park home run.
The scoring barrage didn’t stop there. Both Gardner and freshman Madison Bailey delivered two-run singles in the same inning, accumulating a combined total of nine RBIs just in the first frame. The third inning saw further contributions from teammates Nikayla Weaver, who smashed a three-run inside-the-park homer, and additional hits that led to runs.
Despite the tough game on the mound, Gardner allowed four runs, two of which were earned, on three hits across her three innings of work. She also issued two walks and recorded a strikeout, showing resilience and control amidst constant pressure.
Hunt managed to get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first when Kennedie Carnahan scored from a double by Hannah Spell after drawing a walk. They scratched across a few more runs in the bottom of the third, aided by a single from Dixon and a couple of errors from the Aycock defense.
Throughout the match, Weaver and Bailey of C.B. Aycock played key roles. Weaver hit perfectly from her three attempts including a double and a triple and batted in five runs. Meanwhile, Bailey went 2 for 4 and contributed four RBIs, underscoring the deep offensive capabilities of the Golden Falcons. First baseman Kaitlyn Lancaster and outfielder Paisley Mooring also added to the Falcons’ impressive tally with multiple hits and RBI contributions.
As the Golden Falcons soared high with this resounding win, they not only highlighted the individual excellence of players like Gardner but also showcased a cohesive team performance that will boost their confidence as they move deeper into the season. With the playoffs in sight, maintaining such form could be crucial to their success.
