5-Year-Old Girl Killed in Suspected Road Rage Shooting

Investigators were searching Sunday for whoever opened fire on a vehicle carrying a mother and several young children along Grant Road.

CYPRESS, Texas — A 5-year-old girl was killed late Saturday after someone opened fire on a vehicle carrying her family in northwest Harris County, an attack investigators believe may have stemmed from road rage, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

The shooting happened about 11:30 p.m. in the 11800 block of Grant Road in the Cypress area. Investigators said the family was traveling west on Grant Road from the area of Jones Road when shots were fired at the vehicle. The girl was struck and critically wounded. She was flown by Life Flight to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The girl’s mother was driving and was not reported injured. Several other children younger than 10 were also riding in the vehicle, and two suffered minor injuries from shattered glass, according to reports citing the sheriff’s office. Early reports differed on the total number of other children in the vehicle, and authorities had not publicly clarified that figure Sunday morning.

Deputies described the shooting as an apparent or possible road rage incident, but investigators had not released details explaining what happened between the family’s vehicle and the other vehicle before the gunfire. No information had been released about any argument, traffic maneuver or other interaction that may have preceded the shooting.

The sheriff’s office was working to identify the person who fired the shots and the vehicle involved. As of Sunday morning, authorities had not announced an arrest or released a confirmed description of the suspect or suspect vehicle. Investigators were canvassing the area, looking for evidence and speaking with possible witnesses as they reconstructed the family’s route along Grant Road.

The shooting left investigators examining a stretch of roadway near Jones Road for anything that could help establish where the encounter began and how it unfolded. Evidence from witnesses or nearby cameras could help narrow the timeline, but authorities had not announced any confirmed surveillance images or identifying information from such footage.

The death of the 5-year-old turned what investigators believe began as an encounter between motorists into a homicide investigation involving a vehicle filled with young children. Authorities have released few details about the child and had not publicly identified her in the initial reports reviewed Sunday.

The circumstances remain under investigation, including what prompted the shooting and who was responsible. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office and Crime Stoppers were seeking information from anyone who witnessed the shooting or may have information about the vehicle or shooter.
