The shooting killed 18-year-old Daremiah Banks and sent bullets into a parked vehicle and a nearby home.
WASHINGTON — Gunfire that killed an 18-year-old woman early Sunday also struck nearby property on a Southeast Washington block, according to video obtained by a local television station, as police continued searching for three people seen leaving the area.
The Metropolitan Police Department identified the woman Monday as Daremiah Banks of Northwest Washington. Officers were called at 5:26 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 9, to the 1100 block of K Street SE after a report of a shooting. They found Banks suffering from a gunshot wound, and she was pronounced dead at the scene after D.C. Fire and EMS personnel arrived.
Ring camera footage obtained by FOX 5 DC recorded the sound of several gunshots during the shooting. The station reported that gunfire hit a parked vehicle and shattered its rear windshield. A bullet also entered a nearby home through a window, landing close to where a resident had been sitting. No additional injuries from the gunfire were reported in the accounts reviewed Tuesday.
The property damage adds another dimension to an investigation in which police have released limited information about what led to Banks’ death. Authorities have not announced a motive, identified a suspected shooter or said whether Banks was the intended target. Police also have not publicly explained whether the shots that struck the surrounding property came from the same weapon.
Investigators are searching for three people who were seen leaving the area in a silver sedan after the shooting. Police have not publicly identified those people, released detailed descriptions of them or said whether they are considered suspects in Banks’ killing beyond reports that investigators are seeking them in connection with the case.
Banks had recently graduated from high school, according to FOX 5 DC. Police described her as a Northwest Washington resident. Authorities have not released further information about why she was on K Street early Sunday or whether she had any known relationship with the people investigators are trying to locate.
The shooting happened before sunrise on a residential block, leaving detectives to piece together what occurred from evidence and information gathered around the scene. Police have not released a detailed sequence of events showing where the gunfire originated, how many shots were fired or what happened immediately before the shooting.
The Metropolitan Police Department is asking anyone with information about the homicide to contact investigators. The agency offers a reward of up to $25,000 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of a person responsible for a homicide in Washington.
No arrests had been announced as of Tuesday. Investigators were still working to determine what prompted the shooting, who fired the shots and what connection, if any, existed between Banks and the people seen leaving the area.
