Alexander Nunez remains jailed after a Highway 67 collision killed Kenan Ellis and seriously injured two of Ellis’ cousins.
DUNCANVILLE, Texas — A driver accused of traveling the wrong way on Highway 67 while intoxicated and driving a stolen car faces four felony charges after a head-on crash killed a 29-year-old father and seriously injured two other people, according to police records and local reports.
Alexander Nunez faces one count of intoxication manslaughter, two counts of intoxication assault and one count of unauthorized use of a vehicle following the Sept. 3 crash. He was being held in the Dallas County Jail with bond set at $110,000 and an immigration hold, according to law enforcement information reported Monday.
The crash happened shortly before midnight on Highway 67 in Duncanville. Authorities said Nunez was driving an Audi in the wrong direction when it struck a vehicle carrying Kenan Ellis and two of his cousins. Ellis died in the collision. His cousins, identified by FOX 4 as Shaun and Shaud Steward, were taken to a hospital with serious injuries.
Arrest documents cited by FOX 4 say investigators believed Nunez was intoxicated and that he failed field sobriety tests after the crash. The reporting did not provide details about any toxicology results. The charges remain allegations, and no conviction has been reported.
Authorities also said the Audi had been reported stolen out of Irving. The unauthorized-use charge is separate from the intoxication-related counts stemming from the death and injuries. Publicly available reporting reviewed Tuesday did not establish when the Audi was taken, how Nunez allegedly obtained it or how long it had been traveling before the collision.
The intoxication manslaughter count is tied to Ellis’ death, while the two intoxication assault counts correspond to the serious injuries suffered by the two surviving passengers. FOX 4 reported that both cousins suffered multiple broken bones and are expected to recover. One could require a wheelchair for several months during rehabilitation, the station reported.
The immigration hold adds another custody issue beyond the criminal case. Local reporting said Nunez would remain in the Dallas County Jail because of the hold even though bond had been set at $110,000. Authorities had not publicly detailed the basis or procedural status of the immigration action in the reports reviewed Tuesday.
Ellis had celebrated his 29th birthday in August and was the father of two children, according to his family. Relatives said Ellis and his cousins were less than five minutes from home when the collision occurred. They described him as a dependable relative and devoted father whose death has left his family caring for his children while his cousins recover.
No plea, court date or final case disposition was reported as of Tuesday. Nunez remained in custody as the criminal case proceeded, with the intoxication manslaughter, intoxication assault and vehicle charge still pending.
