Recordings from businesses near Walnut Hill Lane captured the moments surrounding gunfire that killed a driver during the Labor Day holiday.
DALLAS, Texas — Surveillance video from businesses in Dallas’ Lake Highlands area is providing investigators with a visual timeline of a fatal Labor Day shooting that ended with a wounded driver’s car crossing Walnut Hill Lane and crashing into a tree.
The gunfire was reported at about 12:20 p.m. Monday near Walnut Hill Lane and Plano Road. Dallas police said a person driving in the area was shot before the vehicle crashed. Dallas Fire-Rescue pronounced the driver dead at the scene. The victim’s identity had not been released Tuesday morning, and police had announced no arrests.
Video obtained by local news organizations showed activity in a parking lot shared by businesses near the intersection moments before and after the shooting. One recording appeared to show a person emerging near a white SUV and firing toward a white car. The victim’s car then moved rapidly through the lot while the gunfire continued.
A wider camera angle showed the car crossing the edge of the parking area, traveling over a curb and continuing across Walnut Hill Lane before crashing into a tree on the opposite side. The sequence helped establish the movement of the victim’s vehicle during the shooting, although police have not publicly announced conclusions about who fired the shots.
Additional footage showed vehicles leaving the parking area in the seconds after the gunfire. A white SUV backed away and left, while a dark-colored sedan also moved from a parking space. Authorities have not said whether either vehicle was involved in the attack, and no public description of a suspect had been released.
A nearby oil-change business provided surveillance footage to investigators. Police also examined physical evidence in the shopping center parking lot. Television crews reported seeing numerous evidence markers there, while the white car involved in the crash had several apparent bullet impacts.
The shooting occurred in the middle of the day as businesses were operating and residents were moving through the neighborhood for the Labor Day holiday. A Family Dollar manager told KDFW that the victim had visited the store around noon, made a purchase and returned to the vehicle shortly before the shooting began.
People living near the intersection described hearing the gunfire and then seeing the damaged car across Walnut Hill Lane. Police activity quickly spread across the commercial area and nearby roadway. Officers restricted traffic for hours as detectives documented the scene, and drivers were directed around the investigation.
The recordings offer investigators a sequence of events but have not answered the central questions in the case. Police have not disclosed why the driver was shot, whether the attack was targeted or how many people may have participated. Authorities also have not publicly identified the occupants of vehicles seen leaving the area.
Dallas police continued investigating Tuesday and were reviewing evidence gathered from the scene and surrounding businesses. The victim’s name was expected to be released after family notification, while the identity of whoever fired the shots remained unknown publicly.
