Woman Shot in Face Before Dawn on Brooklyn Block

The victim was found bleeding from her head near Georgia Avenue.

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Police were investigating after a 41-year-old woman was shot in the face early Wednesday near 696 Georgia Ave. in East New York and taken to Brookdale Hospital in stable condition.

The shooting was reported shortly after 4:30 a.m. on Georgia Avenue, between Hegeman and New Lots avenues. Officers found the woman bleeding from her head, police said. She was brought to Brookdale Hospital as investigators began sorting through a scene with few public details.

By Wednesday afternoon, police had not said whether the shooting took place inside the house or outside on the street. That question remained central to the investigation. Police also said they did not yet know how the woman sustained the gunshot wound.

The NYPD closed off part of the block while officers worked at the scene. News 12 reported that crime tape covered about half of the block, though a crew did not see evidence markers on the ground. The crew also did not see officers entering or leaving the building while reporters were present.

No arrests had been made in the case. Police did not release a description of a suspect, and officials did not identify the woman. Investigators also had not publicly confirmed whether anyone else was inside the home or nearby when the shot was fired.

The shooting added to concern on a residential East New York block where homes sit close to the street and early police activity can disrupt a neighborhood before sunrise. The location is near New Lots Avenue, a busy corridor that runs through the eastern Brooklyn neighborhood.

The investigation remained active Wednesday night. Police were expected to continue reviewing the scene, checking for witnesses and looking for evidence that could show where the gunfire came from and who fired the shot.
