Detectives are investigating after officers found a woman shot in the chest on Dinwiddie Avenue.
RICHMOND, Va. — A woman was rushed to a hospital with life-threatening injuries after a shooting early Saturday in South Richmond, where police and major crimes detectives spent hours examining evidence along Dinwiddie Avenue near 20th and 21st streets.
Richmond police said officers responded around 3 a.m. to reports of a person shot in the area. When officers arrived, they found a woman suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. Emergency crews transported her to VCU Medical Center for treatment while investigators secured the scene and began interviewing possible witnesses. Authorities had not announced any arrests or released details about a suspect by Saturday afternoon, leaving neighbors searching for answers about what led to the violence in the normally quiet residential section of South Richmond.
Yellow crime-scene tape blocked portions of Dinwiddie Avenue for several hours as detectives photographed the area and collected evidence near the roadway. Police vehicles lined the street while investigators moved between homes speaking with residents who had been awakened by gunfire overnight. Richmond Police officials confirmed that Major Crimes detectives joined patrol officers shortly after the initial emergency call came in.
