Woman Shot in Chest During Overnight Richmond Gunfire

Detectives are investigating after officers found a woman shot in the chest on Dinwiddie Avenue.

RICHMOND, Va. — A woman was rushed to a hospital with life-threatening injuries after a shooting early Saturday in South Richmond, where police and major crimes detectives spent hours examining evidence along Dinwiddie Avenue near 20th and 21st streets.

Richmond police said officers responded around 3 a.m. to reports of a person shot in the area. When officers arrived, they found a woman suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. Emergency crews transported her to VCU Medical Center for treatment while investigators secured the scene and began interviewing possible witnesses. Authorities had not announced any arrests or released details about a suspect by Saturday afternoon, leaving neighbors searching for answers about what led to the violence in the normally quiet residential section of South Richmond.

Yellow crime-scene tape blocked portions of Dinwiddie Avenue for several hours as detectives photographed the area and collected evidence near the roadway. Police vehicles lined the street while investigators moved between homes speaking with residents who had been awakened by gunfire overnight. Richmond Police officials confirmed that Major Crimes detectives joined patrol officers shortly after the initial emergency call came in. Authorities have not publicly identified the woman because her family is still being notified and because investigators said the case remains active. Neighbors who gathered outside during the morning said they heard several loud bangs shortly before police arrived. One resident said the sound echoed through the block and was followed by flashing emergency lights moments later. Officers did not say whether the shooting happened outside or inside a nearby residence, and no information was released about how many shots were fired.

Investigators are also working to determine whether the victim knew the shooter and whether the incident was targeted or random. Police have not disclosed if surveillance cameras from nearby homes or businesses captured any part of the shooting. Detectives spent much of Saturday canvassing the neighborhood for witnesses and additional video evidence. Richmond has experienced several violent incidents involving shootings in recent months, including multiple cases that left women seriously injured or dead. City leaders and police officials have repeatedly voiced concern about the frequency of gun violence in neighborhoods across Richmond’s South Side and East End. While homicide and violent crime rates have fluctuated in recent years, police leaders have said disputes that escalate into gunfire remain one of the department’s biggest public safety challenges. Residents near Dinwiddie Avenue said they are worried about violence occurring so close to homes where families and children live.

Richmond Police have not announced any criminal charges connected to the shooting, and detectives said the investigation remains in its early stages. Officers are reviewing witness statements, physical evidence and any available surveillance footage to establish a timeline of events leading up to the gunfire. Police encouraged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers or Major Crimes detectives as investigators continue searching for leads. Authorities did not provide an updated medical condition for the victim beyond saying her injuries were considered life-threatening when she was transported to the hospital. Officials also have not released details about possible suspects, vehicles or motives connected to the shooting. Detectives are expected to continue processing evidence and conducting interviews over the coming days as they work to determine exactly what happened before the woman was shot.

By midday Saturday, the immediate emergency scene had largely cleared, though the investigation continued to cast a heavy mood over the neighborhood. Residents walked cautiously through the block while discussing the overnight violence with officers and neighbors gathered outside taped-off areas. Some said they were shaken by the large police response and concerned about safety in the area after hearing gunfire in the middle of the night. Police vehicles slowly departed as detectives finished collecting evidence, but investigators said the case remains active and additional information could be released once witnesses are interviewed and evidence is reviewed. For now, authorities say the focus remains on identifying those responsible and determining what triggered the shooting.

The woman remained hospitalized Saturday, and investigators said updates on her condition and the status of the case are expected as detectives continue their investigation in the coming days.
