Woman Killed, Infant Critically Wounded in Northwest Houston Shooting

Police said the child’s father opened fire during an argument before he was found dead inside the Willow Chase Boulevard apartment.

HOUSTON, Texas — A woman was killed and her infant grandchild was critically wounded Saturday night after the child’s father opened fire during an argument at a northwest Houston apartment, then died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.

Houston police said officers were called about 7:35 p.m. Oct. 31 to an apartment in the 7700 block of Willow Chase Boulevard. Investigators said the infant’s father had gone to the apartment to bring diapers to the child’s 19-year-old mother. An argument began between the two before the man pulled out a gun, according to police. Authorities have not said what caused the argument or disclosed any events that may have preceded the confrontation.

Police said the man shot the 19-year-old woman’s mother, who was about 40 years old, and also shot his infant child. The child’s mother was not struck by gunfire. She carried the wounded baby outside the apartment while officers and emergency crews responded. Authorities have not released the infant’s age or identified any of the people involved.

Responding officers found the older woman seriously wounded and began providing emergency aid, police said. Houston police Lt. Michael Pulido said officers performed CPR and applied a chest seal before Houston Fire Department paramedics arrived. The woman and infant were taken to a hospital, where the woman was pronounced dead. The baby remained in critical condition Sunday morning. One report described the child as critical but stable.

The child’s father was found inside the apartment with what police described as an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators have described the shooting as a domestic incident, but police have not publicly identified a motive beyond saying the gunfire followed an argument between the man and the child’s mother.

The shooting left investigators working to establish the full sequence of events inside the apartment. Police have not said how long the man had been at the residence before the argument began, whether anyone else witnessed the entire confrontation or whether officers had previously been called to a dispute involving the people involved. No additional injuries were reported in the accounts released Sunday morning.

The 19-year-old mother escaped the gunfire without physical injury, according to police. Investigators said she was able to get the wounded infant outside after the shooting. Authorities have not released further information about her or said whether other relatives were at the apartment when officers arrived.

The case is being investigated by the Houston Police Department’s Homicide Division. Because the suspected shooter died at the scene, police were not searching for another gunman in connection with the shooting based on information released Sunday. Investigators had not announced criminal charges against any other person.

Authorities had not released the names of the woman who died, the infant’s father or the child as of Sunday morning. Police also had not announced a new update on the infant’s condition beyond reports that the child remained hospitalized in critical condition. The investigation remained active as detectives worked to document what happened before and during the shooting.
