Investigators were reviewing witnesses and possible surveillance evidence after seven people were shot inside a Solano Town Center store.
FAIRFIELD, Calif. — Police were searching Saturday for whoever opened fire inside a Spirit Halloween store at Solano Town Center, killing one person and wounding six others as shoppers visited the mall on the eve of Halloween.
Fairfield police said officers responded to the shopping center at about 8:30 p.m. Friday after reports of gunfire inside the seasonal costume store. Seven people were found with gunshot wounds. One victim died, while the other six were taken to hospitals. At least three of the surviving victims were reported in critical condition. Authorities had not publicly released their names or ages Saturday morning.
The investigation remained focused on identifying whoever was responsible and determining what led to the shooting. Police had not announced an arrest, released a description of a suspect or said whether investigators believed one or more shooters were involved. Authorities also had not announced a motive or said whether the victims were specifically targeted.
Fairfield Police Chief Dan Marshall said late Friday that investigators hoped surveillance cameras at the mall would provide useful evidence. Detectives also began interviewing witnesses as officers searched the shopping center and worked to determine whether anyone connected to the shooting remained in the area.
Marshall said police did not believe there was an immediate threat to the wider public late Friday, but the investigation was continuing. The shooting appeared to have been centered inside the Spirit Halloween store, according to authorities. Police had not determined publicly whether the violence was targeted, gang-related or connected to any dispute.
The FBI’s Sacramento office deployed an Evidence Response Team to assist Fairfield police. Other agencies also responded, including the California Highway Patrol and law enforcement from neighboring communities. The added personnel helped secure the mall, control the surrounding area and support the investigation after the gunfire.
The shooting prompted a large emergency response at Solano Town Center as shoppers and employees fled or sheltered elsewhere in the complex. Witness accounts described people running from the area after hearing gunfire. Officers searched portions of the mall while investigators began processing the scene and gathering information from people who had been nearby.
Solano Town Center is a major shopping destination in Fairfield with more than 130 stores and restaurants. The shooting occurred during a busy Halloween period for the center and inside a temporary retailer specializing in costumes, decorations and seasonal merchandise.
Authorities cautioned against relying on unverified information circulating after the shooting. Police confirmed seven gunshot victims and said detectives were continuing to collect witness accounts, video and other evidence as they worked to establish a sequence of events.
No arrest had been announced by Saturday morning. The identities of the victims, a possible motive and details about the person or people responsible remained undisclosed as Fairfield police continued the investigation with assistance from other agencies.
