Woman Detained After Gunfire Leaves Two Wounded in Harris County

Deputies said an argument among residents turned physical before gunfire erupted Saturday evening at a north Harris County apartment complex.

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — Two men were wounded and a woman was detained after a dispute at a Cypress Station apartment complex escalated into gunfire Saturday evening, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded about 7:48 p.m. Oct. 17 to The Park at Cumberland Apartments at 505 Cypress Station Drive after receiving a report of a shooting. Investigators said an argument involving residents became physical before an adult woman fired toward a group of people nearby. Deputies arrived to find two adult men suffering from gunshot wounds.

Emergency medical crews took both men to a hospital. Authorities initially reported that one man was in critical condition and the other was in fair condition Saturday night. By Sunday, investigators said both men were expected to survive. Preliminary information indicated that both wounded men had been involved in the physical confrontation before the shooting.

The woman suspected of firing the gun was detained at the scene, authorities said. Officials did not immediately release her name or say whether she had been arrested or charged with a crime. Investigators also had not publicly identified the two wounded men. Authorities said there was no continuing threat to people in the surrounding community after the woman was detained.

The circumstances leading up to the gunfire remained under investigation Sunday. Detectives were interviewing witnesses and looking for surveillance video that could help establish what happened before, during and immediately after the confrontation. Authorities had not determined or publicly disclosed the relationships among the people involved.

The investigation marks a change from the limited information available in the hours immediately after the shooting. Early reports confirmed that two men had been taken to a hospital but provided no information about a possible shooter or what may have led to the gunfire. Investigators later said the shooting followed a verbal dispute that became physical and that a woman had been detained.

No motive beyond the reported altercation had been established, and authorities had not announced what prompted the original argument. Investigators also had not said how many people were gathered at the scene when the woman allegedly fired or whether any weapon had been recovered. Those details remained part of the continuing investigation.

Detectives plan to present their findings to the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, which will review the evidence and determine whether criminal charges are appropriate. No charges had been announced as of Sunday, and the investigation remained active.
