Grandfather Struck After Driver Takes Shortcut Through Maplewood Yard

The family says a driver trying to get around road construction crossed private property before striking the man and leaving.

MAPLEWOOD, Minn. — A grandfather was injured Friday morning after a driver cut through a residential yard near Maplewood Drive and Kohlman Lake, struck him and fled, according to the man’s family.

The incident happened around 9 a.m. while the man was visiting a family member’s home, relatives told KSTP. His family said the vehicle entered the yard as the driver apparently tried to get around nearby road construction. The vehicle then struck the man before leaving the area.

The account places the collision away from the normal traffic lanes, turning what began as a reported effort to bypass construction into a hit-and-run investigation involving a person on private property. Authorities had not publicly released the driver’s identity in the information available Sunday.

The victim’s name and age were not released in the reporting reviewed for this article. The extent of his injuries also was not independently detailed by authorities. His family described him as a grandfather and said he was at a relative’s property when he was hit.

The family’s account indicates the driver had left the established roadway before the collision. It was not immediately clear what construction restriction or traffic condition the driver was trying to avoid, how far the vehicle traveled through the property or what type of vehicle was involved.

Police records available through the city of Maplewood include accident and police reports, but detailed records from this incident were not immediately available in the material reviewed. No public announcement identifying a suspect, an arrest or a citation connected to the Friday collision was located as of Sunday.

The circumstances remain important to investigators because a vehicle traveling through a residential yard can leave physical evidence or appear on nearby security cameras. Authorities had not publicly described any such evidence, however, and no official vehicle description was available in the reviewed reports.

The family said the driver sped away after striking the man. Whether the motorist stopped at any point, spoke with anyone at the property or later contacted police had not been publicly confirmed.

The case remained unresolved Sunday, with key details about the driver, vehicle and victim’s medical condition still undisclosed. Maplewood police had not announced an arrest in the incident in publicly available information reviewed for this report.
