Police are examining witness accounts and a high-rise balcony as they work to determine how the woman and baby fell.
NEW YORK — A 23-year-old woman died and a 5-month-old girl was critically injured early Tuesday after they were found outside an apartment building in the Allerton section of the Bronx with injuries consistent with a fall from an elevated position, police said.
Officers responded at about 3:38 a.m. Oct. 6 to 2550 Olinville Ave. and found the woman and infant outside the residential building. The baby was rushed to Jacobi Hospital, where she remained in critical condition. Authorities had not publicly identified the woman or the child as the investigation continued.
Detectives were working to determine whether the pair fell, jumped or were pushed. Police had not announced a conclusion about how they came from the building, making witness accounts a central but still unconfirmed part of the investigation. No arrests had been announced.
One witness told police that the woman and child had been thrown from a balcony, according to WABC-TV. Authorities had not confirmed that account. Another witness told the station she heard a woman yelling before seeing something fall. Police spent hours examining a 15th-floor balcony while investigators canvassed the area for surveillance video and additional witnesses.
The investigation remained focused on reconstructing what happened inside the building before the woman and baby were found. Investigators were seeking evidence that could establish where the fall began and whether another person was involved. Early police information described the injuries as consistent with a fall from an elevated position but did not establish the circumstances behind it.
WABC-TV reported that investigators were seeking to speak with the woman’s ex-boyfriend as part of their inquiry. Police had not publicly accused him of a crime or identified him as a suspect. Another report citing the NYPD said authorities had not identified a person of interest, underscoring that the investigation remained at an early stage.
Some details in the first reports differed as authorities gathered information. News organizations reported varying accounts of whether the woman was pronounced dead at the scene or after being taken to a hospital. What remained consistent was that the woman died and the infant was hospitalized in critical condition.
The relationship between the woman and the baby had not been publicly confirmed in the initial police accounts reviewed Tuesday. Investigators also had not released information about what may have happened in the apartment before the emergency response or whether anyone else was present when the fall occurred.
Police continued to review evidence and speak with potential witnesses Tuesday. No arrests had been announced, and authorities had not confirmed the witness allegation that the woman and infant were intentionally thrown from the building.
