Investigators say cameras recorded the victims entering the store before a gunman followed and opened fire near the checkout counter.
LANCASTER, Pa. — Surveillance video from a Lancaster corner store is central to the criminal case arising from a shooting that killed 16-year-old Jonaston Martin and wounded an 18-year-old man, according to court records describing the attack.
The affidavit of probable cause gives investigators a recorded sequence of events from immediately before and after the Oct. 3 shooting in the 400 block of South Duke Street. Police have charged 23-year-old Jaiden Servance with criminal homicide, attempted criminal homicide, recklessly endangering another person and carrying a firearm without a license. He remained wanted as of Tuesday.
Police said the store’s cameras recorded both exterior and interior areas. The footage showed Martin and the 18-year-old entering the business and standing near the checkout counter, which was positioned close to the entrance, according to the affidavit.
Less than a minute later, investigators said, another man wearing a red jacket walked toward the entrance with Servance following behind him. Police allege Servance appeared to reach into his waistband with his right hand as he approached the store.
According to the court filing, Servance entered behind the other man, reached around him with a black firearm and fired multiple rounds at Martin and the 18-year-old. The two men who had entered together then left the business and fled, investigators said.
Police recovered six .40-caliber shell casings from the floor near the place where investigators said Servance had been standing. A store clerk was behind the counter only a few feet from the victims when the gunfire occurred, according to the affidavit.
Officers responding shortly before 8 p.m. found Martin near the store entrance. Court documents said he had suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. The Lancaster County Coroner’s Office later identified Martin as a Lancaster resident and determined that he died from gunshot wounds. His death was ruled a homicide.
The second victim, an 18-year-old man whose name has not been released, suffered gunshot wounds and was taken to a hospital. Authorities described his injuries as not life-threatening. No injuries to the store clerk were reported in the available police and court accounts.
The evidence described in the affidavit also forms the basis for the firearms charge. Police said Servance’s concealed-carry permit had been revoked before the shooting. Authorities have not publicly explained why it was revoked or released information showing where the firearm used in the shooting came from.
Police have also not announced a confirmed motive. The court account describes the movements recorded on surveillance video but does not establish from the publicly available information what prompted the shooting. Authorities have not announced charges against the man in the red jacket seen with Servance.
The Lancaster City Bureau of Police issued an active warrant for Servance on Oct. 5. The charges remain allegations, and Servance is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court. Investigators said the homicide inquiry remains ongoing and further details may be released as the case develops.
