Woman Arrested After Tow Driver Killed During Repossession

Police say the accused shooter has not been identified.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A 37-year-old woman was arrested after a vehicle repossession dispute that came before the fatal shooting of Jacksonville tow truck driver Oliver Lopez at a Brentwood apartment complex.

Rockelle Jones was charged with burglary after police said she entered Lopez’s tow truck during a dispute over a Jeep Compass registered in her name. The arrest does not close the homicide case. Police said the person who shot Lopez has not been identified.

The shooting happened around 10 p.m. May 26 at Sanctuary Walk apartments on East 21st Street. Lopez was there with another person to repossess a 2013 Jeep Compass. According to an arrest report, Jones approached Lopez and demanded that he “put her car down” after the tow lift had been attached.

Police said Lopez did not stop the repossession. Jones then got inside the Jeep and started the engine, according to the report. Lopez entered the passenger side, turned off the vehicle and removed the keys. Investigators said Jones then entered Lopez’s tow truck, which was occupied, and removed keys from the ignition.

The report said Lopez and Jones struggled over the keys until a bystander stepped in and helped remove them from Jones’ hand. Police have not said exactly how the shooting began. Earlier police accounts said a man came outside during the argument and fired multiple shots, striking Lopez.

Lopez was taken to a hospital, where he died. Family members identified him as the tow truck driver killed in the shooting. A cousin described Lopez as “a very hard-working guy and a great friend, a great brother and a loving father.”

Jones was booked on the burglary charge May 27 and remained listed in custody at the Duval County jail after the arrest. Court records cited in local reports show an arraignment scheduled for June 26. Police have not announced a murder arrest.

As of Friday, investigators had reported one arrest tied to the repossession dispute, but the fatal shooting investigation remained open. The next listed court step for Jones is the June 26 arraignment.
