CHICAGO — Detectives were searching Saturday for people involved in an early-morning Roseland shooting that left a 67-year-old woman wounded, as published accounts offered different descriptions of how the encounter began.
The woman was shot in the leg about 5:45 a.m. Friday, Aug. 28, in the 9300 block of South Stewart Avenue. She was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where her condition was stabilized, authorities said. No arrests had been announced.
The investigation centers on an encounter near a parked vehicle shortly before the gunfire. CBS News Chicago reported, citing police sources, that the woman’s son saw two men breaking into his mother’s car and opened the door of their home to confront them. One of the men then fired toward the son, and the woman was struck in the leg, according to that report.
The Chicago Sun-Times reported a different sequence based on information attributed to Chicago police. Its account said the woman noticed two people near a parked car and approached them before they opened fire. The publicly available reports did not explain the discrepancy, and police had not released a detailed statement clarifying who first approached the two people.
Investigators had at least some descriptive information to work with. CBS News Chicago reported that an officer described two males over police dispatch. One was said to be wearing a black hoodie with green sweatpants. The second was described as wearing a black hoodie and black pants, along with a skullcap or hat and a gray or green backpack.
The two fled after the shooting, according to the CBS report. Authorities had not released names or announced that either had been identified. Police also had not reported recovering a weapon or disclosed whether surveillance footage from the area was available to investigators.
No other injuries were reported in connection with the shooting. The woman’s name was not released in the accounts reviewed, and authorities had not provided additional information about her recovery beyond saying her condition was stabilized.
