Detectives spent Sunday examining the Northwest 37th Street scene after gunfire left one man dead and another hospitalized.
LAUDERDALE LAKES, Fla. — An early morning shooting that killed one man and wounded another brought sheriff’s deputies, crime scene investigators and police dogs to a Lauderdale Lakes neighborhood Sunday, disrupting residents as detectives searched for evidence and worked to determine what happened.
The Broward Sheriff’s Office said deputies were called at about 3:30 a.m. Sept. 20 to the 3200 block of Northwest 37th Street. They found an adult man with a gunshot wound, and Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue transported him to a hospital. His condition had not been publicly disclosed by Monday.
Authorities later learned that another man who had been shot had reached a nearby hospital separately. That man died from his injuries. Officials had not released his name or provided additional identifying information.
The shooting prompted a large investigative response along the residential street. Television footage showed crime scene tape restricting access to parts of the area as detectives examined the scene. WSVN reported that police dogs were present while investigators searched for clues.
The activity affected people living nearby well after the initial emergency response. One resident told Local 10 that people inside her home heard several loud shots before realizing something serious was happening outside. Another resident said she was surprised when she learned that two people had been shot.
CBS News Miami reported that a resident identified as Jeanette Castillo said she had been unable to sleep and was temporarily kept from going inside her home while investigators worked. Another neighbor told the station that serious incidents were unusual in the area and expressed concern about the shooting.
Authorities detained one person during the investigation, but they had not announced criminal charges as of Monday. Local 10 reported that a man in handcuffs was seen being taken toward an ambulance and treated for an injury to his hand before being driven away for questioning. Officials have not publicly explained the injury or confirmed that the man shown was the person BSO said was detained.
Investigators also had not disclosed what may have led to the gunfire. No motive had been announced, and authorities had not said whether the people involved knew one another. BSO had not publicly identified a suspected shooter or described the detained person as having been arrested.
Those unanswered questions remained central to the investigation a day after the shooting. Detectives were still working to establish the sequence of events and determine what evidence from the scene could show about how the confrontation unfolded.
The identities of the man who died and the surviving shooting victim remained undisclosed Monday. No charges had been announced, and the Broward Sheriff’s Office continued investigating the fatal shooting.
