Police are investigating what happened before gunfire killed two boys and injured two female relatives at a Stone Mountain-area apartment complex.
DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Detectives are investigating whether a dispute before Sunday’s fatal shooting at a Stone Mountain-area apartment complex contributed to gunfire that killed two brothers and wounded two women, while no arrests had been publicly announced Monday.
The shooting killed 11-year-old Jamarion Rolle and his 12-year-old brother, Jahki Clark. Two women related to the boys were also injured. Police have said preliminary evidence suggests the violence may have been connected to a fight or disagreement, but authorities have not announced a finding about exactly what triggered the shooting or who fired the shots.
Officers were called to 1075 North Hairston Road after reports that several people had been shot. Jamarion was found with a gunshot wound and died at the scene. Jahki was taken to a hospital in critical condition and later died, authorities said.
A 19-year-old woman and a 39-year-old woman were also taken to a hospital. Police listed both women in stable condition. Investigators said all four people who were shot were related, although police have not publicly explained each relationship.
Authorities have provided few details about the disagreement they believe may be connected to the shooting. Police have not publicly said who was involved in the earlier encounter, what caused it or whether everyone involved in that dispute was present when the gunfire began.
The boys’ mother separately told WSB-TV that she believes the violence followed a fight connected to a football game several days earlier. She said members of another family came to the apartment complex Sunday while her family was having a barbecue and that fighting broke out before shots were fired. Police have not publicly confirmed that account as the established sequence of events.
The mother’s account also included details about the injured relatives that differ from the ages released by police. Because investigators have continued to identify the wounded women publicly as 19 and 39, those official ages remain the figures provided by law enforcement as detectives work through witness accounts and other evidence.
Officers searched a large area around the complex after the shooting. Investigators were seen examining the grounds and using equipment including metal detectors as they looked for evidence. Police said broad searches can help officers locate shell casings or other items that might otherwise be missed, particularly in grassy areas.
Police said there was no continuing threat to the surrounding community and described the case as an active investigation rather than an active shooter situation. No possible suspect had been publicly identified, and authorities had not announced that anyone was in custody in connection with the deaths.
The DeKalb County Medical Examiner’s Office identified Jamarion and Jahki on Monday. Investigators are continuing to examine the earlier dispute, physical evidence and other information as they work to determine who was responsible for the shooting and whether additional people were involved.
