Police arrested a 46-year-old man after the Saturday night confrontation at a Fuel City in northwest Dallas.
DALLAS, Texas — A security guard remained hospitalized in critical condition after police said a man attacked him with a metal rake during a confrontation at a northwest Dallas gas station Saturday night.
Dallas police arrested 46-year-old Rosalino Lopez in connection with the Aug. 15 assault in the 2400 block of West Northwest Highway. Lopez is accused of attacking James Johnson, a security guard employed by CDS Protective Services, after a disturbance at the Fuel City where Johnson was working. Dallas County jail records list Lopez on an aggravated assault charge involving a security officer.
Police said the confrontation began after Lopez damaged a breaker box at the business. Johnson confronted him, and police said Lopez became combative. Investigators said the confrontation initially involved punches before Lopez allegedly used a metal rake to assault Johnson.
Johnson deployed a Taser during the struggle, but police said it did not stop the confrontation. Investigators said Lopez then fled while Johnson collapsed in the roadway near the business. Dallas Fire-Rescue personnel took Johnson to a hospital with critical injuries.
A truck driver, Michael Black, witnessed the confrontation and stopped his vehicle to help protect Johnson after the security guard fell in the road. Black positioned his truck to block approaching traffic while emergency responders were on the way.
Police said Lopez was located nearby after Black pointed officers toward a man walking along the highway. Investigators said officers later found a metal rake in a shopping cart associated with Lopez. Police have identified the rake as the weapon allegedly used in the assault.
Lopez was booked into the Dallas County Jail. Police have described the case as aggravated assault of a security officer, and an earlier police account described the allegation as a first-degree felony involving serious bodily injury. The charge is an accusation, and Lopez has not been convicted in connection with the case.
CDS Protective Services confirmed that Johnson worked for the company and thanked Dallas Fire-Rescue and Dallas police for their response. The company said emergency personnel provided medical assistance, secured the scene and continued the investigation.
Johnson remained hospitalized in critical condition as of Monday evening. Police assault detectives were continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack, while Lopez remained booked in the Dallas County jail system.
