Two girls escaped without apparent serious injuries after residents rushed toward the flames and positioned themselves beneath a third-story window.
HOUSTON, Texas — Two young sisters escaped a burning three-story townhome after neighbors rushed toward the fire and caught them as their mother lowered or sent them from an upper-floor window, while both parents were hospitalized with injuries.
The fire broke out early Thursday, Nov. 5, at a townhome on Beasley Hills Lane in the Shady Acres and Greater Heights area of northwest Houston. Houston Fire Department crews were called to the scene at about 1:40 a.m. The family of four was trapped by a rapidly spreading fire that authorities said appeared to have begun in the garage area after a vehicle caught fire.
John Bauer, who lives nearby, said he became aware of the emergency after hearing popping noises and noticing an orange glow outside. He and another neighbor moved toward the burning home after realizing people were still inside. They heard voices from the rear of the property and crossed fences to reach the family.
The girls, ages 4 and 5, were on the third floor with their mother, Casey Gonzalez, according to their aunt, Michaela Ritchie. Smoke had filled the home, leaving the family with few ways out. Bauer said he could hear Gonzalez calling from above even when heavy smoke made it difficult to see her clearly.
Bauer and another neighbor positioned themselves below the window and called for the family to follow their voices. The girls were brought out one at a time, and the neighbors caught them below. The children did not appear to suffer serious injuries in the escape.
After the girls were out, Gonzalez also tried to escape through the window. Family members said she fell from the third story as smoke obscured the area below. She was taken to a hospital and was recovering from injuries that included a reported back injury.
The children’s father, Efrain Gonzalez, suffered severe burns during the fire and was reported in critical condition. Family members said he had tried to move the burning vehicle from the garage before attempting to return to the home as the fire spread. All four members of the family were taken for medical treatment.
Houston Fire Department officials said the fire was contained to the family’s unit. A firewall between the attached homes helped prevent the flames from spreading through the rest of the complex. Firefighters faced substantial damage inside the burning structure, but no firefighter injuries were reported.
The rescue unfolded before firefighters had fully brought the scene under control, leaving nearby residents to respond to the family’s calls for help. Bauer later said he did what he could in the moment and credited the girls for staying composed as they followed instructions from above.
Investigators had not announced a final cause of the fire as of Saturday. The family remained focused on the parents’ recovery, with Efrain Gonzalez last reported in critical condition and Casey Gonzalez recovering after the fall.
