Police Rush to Reported Fall, Find 80-Year-Old Woman Shot Dead

Officers expecting to assist a woman who had fallen instead found 80-year-old Jacqueline Brown suffering from a gunshot wound.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A Fayetteville police response to what was reported as an elderly woman’s fall turned into a fatal shooting investigation Thursday when officers entered a South Shield Drive home and found 80-year-old Jacqueline Brown with a gunshot wound.

Officers were dispatched at about 1:10 p.m. Nov. 5 to the 7700 block of South Shield Drive after authorities received a report that a woman had fallen. The nature of the response changed once officers reached the residence and discovered that Brown had been shot.

Emergency personnel provided lifesaving care before Brown was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, where she later died. Police have not explained why the initial call described the situation as a fall or released information about who contacted authorities.

The difference between the original report and what officers found has become one of the central unanswered elements of the case. Authorities have not said whether the person who reported the fall knew Brown had been shot, whether someone else was present at the residence or how much time passed between the shooting and the police response.

Police have said the incident appears to have been isolated and that there is no threat to the public. That assessment indicates investigators do not believe the shooting is part of a continuing danger in the surrounding community, but authorities have released few details about what led to Brown’s death.

No suspect has been publicly identified, and police have not announced an arrest or a possible motive. Investigators also have not disclosed whether they believe another person fired the shot, whether a weapon was recovered or whether detectives are examining any particular theory about what happened inside the home.

The available information leaves several basic questions unresolved. Police have not publicly described the events immediately before Brown was wounded, identified potential witnesses or said whether investigators are seeking a particular person. Authorities also have not announced criminal charges in the case.

The investigation remains active as detectives work to reconstruct the circumstances surrounding Brown’s death. Detective J. Phillips is the listed investigator, and police have asked anyone with information to contact Phillips at 910-322-7046. Anonymous tips may be provided to Fayetteville-Cumberland County Crime Stoppers at 910-483-8477.

As of Saturday, the Police Department continued to describe the shooting as isolated. No additional public information had established why the emergency call was initially reported as a fall or who was responsible for the gunshot that killed Brown.
