Tragedy Strikes Toddler’s Birthday Bash in Stockton: Gunfire Claims Lives of Three Children and an Adult

STOCKTON, Calif. — A festive birthday celebration for a young child devolved into tragedy over the weekend when gunfire erupted, resulting in the deaths of three children and an adult. Guests were gathered at a banquet hall for the event when chaos ensued, shocking the community of over 320,000 residents.

Among the victims were 8-year-old Maya Lupian and 14-year-old Amari Peterson. Both were enjoying the party, which attracted around 100 attendees, according to San Joaquin County Sheriff Patrick Withrow. The other casualties included a 9-year-old and a 21-year-old, identified as Susano Archuleta. The violence unfolded as guests prepared to cut the birthday cake, leading to a profound sense of loss and bewilderment.

Maya Lupian, remembered by her school as a vibrant third-grader at Aspire APEX Academy, was described by her family as an outgoing child passionate about dance, singing, and art. She was a purple belt in karate and an active participant in various activities. Her family created a GoFundMe page to assist with funeral expenses, expressing their heartache over the loss. “She deserved a childhood full of laughter and dreams… not this,” the family stated, heartbroken over not celebrating her upcoming 9th birthday.

Amari Peterson, the other child victim, was at the party with his family when the shooting occurred. His mother, Kimberly Peterson, reflected on her son’s lively spirit, calling him “the glue to our family.” Amari’s father, Patrick Peterson, witnessed the gunman firing into the crowd and rushed to his son’s side after hearing the shots. Tragically, despite performing CPR until paramedics arrived, Amari succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. His family is now grappling with plans for his funeral instead of celebrating his high school graduation.

The birthday party’s host, Patrice Williams, described a sudden, terrifying shift from joy to panic. Initially believing the noises to be balloons popping, she quickly realized the truth as guests scrambled for safety. Williams expressed her sorrow for the families affected by the horrific incident, wishing to understand who could commit such violence in a place meant for celebration.

Among those injured was Amari’s 12-year-old sister, Kaesanii, who narrowly escaped unharmed after being grazed by a bullet. The family has also initiated a fundraiser to aid in coping with the unexpected financial burden from their tragic loss.

Authorities indicate that the shooting may have been targeted, but no details have been released concerning the motivations or identity of the perpetrator. Sheriff Withrow has called upon community members to provide any information they may have concerning the shooting, emphasizing that failure to act only perpetuates such violence.

The city of Stockton has struggled with violent crime rates significantly higher than the state average, with over 3,600 reported incidents last year. As the community grapples with this latest tragedy, the focus remains on healing and ensuring accountability for the senseless act that took place amidst what should have been a joyful gathering.
