Police have not identified a suspect or said whether the violence was connected to a deadly shooting earlier in the week.
WAUKEGAN, Ill. — Three people were shot Wednesday night outside a Waukegan apartment complex where people had gathered for a memorial honoring a 29-year-old man killed in a separate shooting earlier in the week, authorities and local reports said.
The shooting happened around 9 p.m. at Cinnamon Lake Towers on West Glen Flora Avenue. Waukegan police confirmed three people were shot but had not released their conditions as of Thursday. Police also had not announced an arrest, identified a suspect or disclosed what investigators believe led to the gunfire.
The gathering was being held in memory of Koron Gibson, 29, of Waukegan, who was fatally shot Monday evening in the city. A neighbor told CBS News Chicago that people had gathered near the apartment complex for a vigil honoring Gibson. Police have not said the Wednesday shooting was related to Gibson’s death, and investigators had not publicly established a connection between the two incidents.
The neighbor said she was inside watching television when she initially thought she heard fireworks. She turned down the television and realized the sounds were gunfire. She described hearing a rapid series of shots before emergency crews and police filled the area outside the complex.
Video recorded around the apartment complex showed a large gathering in the parking lot as officers investigated. Portions of the area were blocked with crime scene tape while police worked at the scene. Several neighbors told CBS News Chicago that the people who were shot were women, but police had not publicly confirmed their identities, ages or genders.
The gathering followed Gibson’s death two days earlier. Police said officers responded shortly before 7 p.m. Monday to a report of shots fired in the 700 block of Lincoln Street. Investigators found multiple shell casings at the scene. Around the same time, Gibson arrived at Vista Medical Center East with multiple gunshot wounds and later died.
Witnesses in the Monday case told police that people possibly involved in that shooting left in a white Nissan. Officers later spotted a vehicle matching that description and attempted to stop it. Police said the driver did not stop, beginning a pursuit that continued for about an hour and traveled through several communities before ending back in Waukegan.
Four juveniles who had been inside the vehicle were taken into custody, police said. Investigators also recovered two firearms from locations in Waukegan as they gathered evidence in the Monday homicide investigation. Authorities have not publicly announced charges against the juveniles in connection with Gibson’s death.
A memorial event for Gibson had been planned Wednesday near the area of the Monday shooting. CBS News Chicago reported that it remained unclear whether the gathering was moved to Cinnamon Lake Towers or whether participants later traveled to the apartment complex. That uncertainty is among several details police had not clarified Thursday.
Investigators had not released information about a possible motive in Wednesday night’s shooting, how many people opened fire or whether a suspect had been identified. Police also had not announced whether the three people who were wounded were attending the memorial or happened to be at the apartment complex when the shooting occurred.
The two investigations remained active Thursday. Authorities have said only that Gibson was killed Monday and three people were wounded Wednesday, while any link between the incidents remained unconfirmed.
