Daniel Le Brun was arrested after negotiators and tactical officers surrounded a business where deputies say he barricaded himself.
CORNELIUS, Ore. — A teenager’s report of an assault set off an hours-long police standoff at a Cornelius business complex and led to attempted murder, kidnapping and sexual abuse allegations against a 42-year-old man, authorities and local news reports said.
The case began about 8:30 p.m. Aug. 27 when a juvenile ran to the Cornelius Police Department after an alleged assault near the 1600 block of North Adair Street. The Washington County Sheriff’s Office said information from the teenager led deputies to Daniel Le Brun of Cornelius, who was barricaded inside a business at the Plaza Grande complex.
Deputies said Le Brun had several less-lethal-style guns and knives and refused commands to surrender. The Sheriff’s Office called in its Tactical Negotiations Team, Crisis Negotiations Unit and other crisis-response specialists as officers worked to bring the confrontation to an end without further violence.
Authorities used a drone to monitor Le Brun’s movements inside the business while negotiators attempted to communicate with him. Tactical team members took him into custody at about 1 a.m. Aug. 28, roughly four and a half hours after the teenager first went to police.
Le Brun was not immediately booked into jail. The Sheriff’s Office said he had ingested a potentially lethal amount of medication and was transported to an area hospital. He remained there until Sept. 1, when authorities said he was discharged and taken to the Washington County Jail.
The Sheriff’s Office initially announced four allegations against Le Brun: first-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault, first-degree sexual abuse and unlawful use of a weapon. KPTV later reported that he appeared in Washington County court facing six charges, including first-degree kidnapping and first-degree unlawful sexual penetration in addition to attempted murder, assault, unlawful use of a weapon and sexual abuse. Le Brun is accused, and the charges do not establish guilt.
Investigators have released few details about what they allege happened before the teenager reached the police station. Authorities have not publicly identified the juvenile or disclosed the teenager’s exact age. Sheriff’s Office spokesperson David Huey told KXL the juvenile had visible injuries after getting away from the alleged attack.
The case expanded after investigators searched the business complex and located a concealed room. The Sheriff’s Office said the alleged crimes occurred there. Huey said the space was part of the building’s original construction but was not accessible to the public. Authorities have not disclosed specific evidence found inside.
The location has also become part of the continuing investigation into Le Brun’s connection to businesses at the Plaza Grande complex. KPTV reported that the standoff occurred at Crossroads Gaming and quoted an operations manager as saying Le Brun had previously been married to the store’s owner, frequently spent time there and kept personal property at the business. Some earlier reports characterized Le Brun as a business owner, but later reporting said authorities withdrew that description while investigating his exact connection to the store.
The concealed-room discovery has prompted detectives to look beyond the initial case. The Sheriff’s Office said Le Brun had access to children through a memorabilia business and that investigators are concerned additional victims may not have been identified. His booking photograph was released as part of the effort to identify possible additional criminal activity.
Washington County detectives are asking witnesses and anyone with information about Le Brun to contact the Violent Crimes Unit at 503-846-2500 and cite case number 50-26-12158. The investigation remained active Thursday as authorities sought information about possible additional victims and Le Brun’s contacts with young people.
