Police said the child’s mother was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries after officers responded to a Brook Stone Court home.
FRANKFORT, Ill. — A 2-year-old child died after being found unresponsive inside a Frankfort home Tuesday, and police said a preliminary investigation indicates the death was a domestic-related homicide.
Frankfort police said officers were dispatched at about 4:04 p.m. Sept. 1 to the 22700 block of Brook Stone Court for a report of an unresponsive child. Officers arrived to find CPR being performed on the child. The child was taken to a hospital for additional treatment and later pronounced dead, according to police.
Police said officers also found the child’s mother at the home attempting to harm herself. She was transported to a hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. Authorities have not publicly identified either the child or the mother.
The department described the case as a domestic-related homicide based on its preliminary investigation. Police had not released information Wednesday about how the child died, what investigators believe happened before officers arrived or whether anyone was in custody. No criminal charges had been announced.
The emergency response began Tuesday afternoon and continued into the night. Investigators remained focused on the Brook Stone Court property, a home at the end of a residential cul-de-sac. Officers and detectives were seen entering and leaving the property as the investigation continued into Wednesday morning.
The Frankfort Fire Protection District said its crews were dispatched shortly after police and transported five people from the home. Authorities have not publicly explained who the other people transported were or whether their transportation was directly connected to the child’s death.
Residents described the neighborhood as normally quiet and said the prolonged police presence was unusual. Carolyn Pappas, who lives nearby, said learning that a child had died only a few blocks away was heartbreaking and had shaken people in the community.
Frankfort officials expressed sympathy for those affected and urged the community to respond with compassion as investigators work to establish what happened. Officials have not released further details about the circumstances surrounding the child’s death.
The investigation remained active Wednesday. Police said additional information was not immediately available, leaving the child’s identity, the cause and manner of death and the events leading to the emergency call among the questions still unresolved.
