TOMS RIVER, NJ – A teenager without a driver’s license is facing severe charges after a high-speed police chase ended in a tragic crash, claiming the lives of two young adults. The incident occurred Friday night in Toms River, where speeds reportedly reached 118 mph.
The teen driver was behind the wheel of a BMW when he livestreamed the pursuit through Ocean County. Despite the dangers, passengers encouraged him to accelerate. The pursuit began around 10:45 p.m. as the BMW raced east over the Thomas Mathis Bridge, navigated north, and then south on Route 35 through Seaside Heights, before turning west on Route 37 over the Stanley Tunney Bridge.
Authorities decided to terminate the chase due to safety concerns, but moments later, the BMW collided with a Toyota Camry carrying four young individuals at the intersection of Routes 37 and 166. The crash resulted in the deaths of the Camry’s driver and front-seat passenger, while the two rear-seat occupants suffered critical injuries.
The young driver of the BMW emerged unscathed and was apprehended at the crash site. Although underage and unlicensed, he was subjected to a blood test, the results of which have yet to be disclosed. He faces numerous charges, including aggravated manslaughter and vehicular homicide.
The victims’ identities remain undisclosed, but it is known that they were in their 20s and resided in the area. The tragic event has left the community in shock, with mourners placing flowers and stuffed animals at the crash site to honor the deceased.
