One person was killed and a 15-year-old girl was seriously injured in shootings that police have not connected.
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Fort Lauderdale police investigated two shootings reported within about two hours early Saturday, including a fatal shooting and a separate attack that left a 15-year-old girl seriously injured, with authorities saying the two cases have not been connected.
The later shooting was reported at about 3:45 a.m. in the 1700 block of Northwest Ninth Street. Officers found the teenage girl suffering from a gunshot wound and provided aid until Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue arrived, police said. She was taken as a trauma alert to Broward Health Medical Center. Authorities later said she was expected to survive.
About two hours earlier, officers responded at approximately 1:51 a.m. to a ShotSpotter alert in the 1600 block of Northwest Eighth Avenue, according to police information reported by local news outlets. A person was found with a gunshot wound and later died. Police have not publicly linked that shooting to the one involving the teenager.
The close timing of the two shootings brought police to separate locations during the early-morning hours, but investigators have not released evidence suggesting the incidents were related. Authorities have continued investigating the circumstances of each case independently, and no connection should be inferred from their timing.
In the case involving the teenager, her family told local television stations that they believe the shooting followed a confrontation with someone the girl knew. Her grandmother, Cynthia Scriven-Husband, said the family understood that a former friend may have been involved and that someone had come to the home threatening the girl and seeking a fight.
Police have not publicly confirmed that account. Investigators have not identified a suspect in the teenager’s shooting or provided a detailed description of what occurred before gunfire erupted. No arrest had been announced in that case as of the latest reports.
Surveillance video reported by WSVN showed a person running along a street around the time of the shooting involving the 15-year-old. Detectives later worked at the home to collect information and evidence. Police have not said whether the person seen running has been identified or whether that person has any confirmed connection to the case.
The teenager’s condition offered one positive development in an otherwise violent stretch of the morning. Although she was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, police later said she was expected to survive. Her identity has not been publicly released.
Details about the earlier fatal shooting also remained limited. Police have not announced that the two investigations share a suspect, motive or other circumstances. The separate locations, short interval between the calls and seriousness of the violence are confirmed, but investigators have not publicly established a broader link.
Fort Lauderdale police continued seeking information as both investigations moved forward. Authorities have asked people with information to contact police, while Broward Crime Stoppers was also identified by local reporting as an avenue for tips. No connection between the two shootings had been announced as of the latest available reports.
