Prosecutors say the 15-year-old faces first-degree murder and other felony charges after a woman was killed and three others were targeted.
DETROIT, Mich. — A 15-year-old Detroit boy has been charged as an adult in connection with an Aug. 21 shooting at an east-side liquor store that killed 65-year-old Faith Williams and wounded another woman, according to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office.
Isaiah Lamar Gordon faces one count of first-degree murder, three counts of assault with intent to murder and four counts of felony firearm. Prosecutors allege Gordon fired at Williams and a 29-year-old woman and then shot at a passing vehicle carrying two other people. Authorities said Gordon did not know the victims.
Detroit police were dispatched at about 11:10 p.m. Aug. 21 to a liquor store in the 15500 block of East Warren Avenue. Officers found Williams inside the business and the other woman outside. Williams was pronounced dead at the scene, while the injured woman was taken to a hospital for treatment.
Prosecutors allege Gordon also fired at two people inside a vehicle passing the scene. Neither person in the vehicle was reported injured. Authorities have not released a motive for the shootings, and the allegations against Gordon have not been proven in court.
Gordon left the area after the gunfire, authorities said. Police initially described the suspect as potentially armed and dangerous as investigators searched for him. Gordon’s brother surrendered him to officers at Detroit’s Ninth Precinct on Aug. 22, according to prosecutors.
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said her office was moving the case into adult court. She described the alleged attacks on people who did not know Gordon as “unprovoked and unimaginable” and said he should be held accountable despite his personal circumstances.
Gordon was arraigned Aug. 29 in 36th District Court and was remanded to the Juvenile Detention Facility. His age does not prevent prosecutors from pursuing the case in adult court under the procedure being used in the case.
The charges include three assault-with-intent-to-murder counts because prosecutors accuse Gordon of targeting the wounded woman and the two occupants of the passing vehicle in addition to the fatal shooting of Williams. Four felony-firearm counts accompany the underlying allegations.
The case followed an initial investigation in which police publicly disclosed that one woman had been killed and another critically injured near the East Warren Avenue business. Authorities later identified Gordon and released the expanded account involving the passing vehicle when charges were announced.
Gordon is scheduled for a probable cause conference Sept. 8 and a preliminary examination Sept. 15 in 36th District Court. The court proceedings will determine whether prosecutors have sufficient evidence for the charges to move forward. Gordon is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
