Police identified the victim’s parents-in-law as the two suspects while detectives continued investigating what led to the Saturday afternoon shooting.
DUBLIN, Calif. — The two people arrested after a fatal shooting at the Dublin Sports Grounds are the victim’s parents-in-law, police said, establishing a family connection at the center of a homicide investigation in which authorities have not announced a motive.
Dublin Police Services identified the victim as Jonathan McKinsey, 40, of Dublin. Police identified the suspects as Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, both 77 and also Dublin residents. Authorities said Zhang and Chen are married and are McKinsey’s parents-in-law. Both were arrested on suspicion of murder and booked into Santa Rita Jail.
The shooting occurred Saturday, Sept. 26, in the parking lot of the Dublin Sports Grounds at 6700 Dublin Blvd. At about 3:08 p.m., a Dublin Police Services sergeant driving near the recreation complex saw a man lying on the ground and stopped to investigate, police said. Dispatchers were receiving multiple 911 calls reporting the incident at about the same time.
Additional police and emergency medical personnel responded and found McKinsey in the middle of the parking lot with multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not released a detailed account of any interaction involving McKinsey, Zhang and Chen before the shooting.
Witnesses helped police identify and locate the two suspects, who had remained nearby, authorities said. Officers detained them within minutes. Dublin Police Services credited witnesses and other community members with helping responding officers make the arrests quickly.
The family connection has become a key confirmed element of the investigation, but it has not answered the central question of what led to the killing. Police said detectives were continuing to examine evidence to determine the circumstances surrounding the homicide. Authorities had not announced a motive as of Monday morning.
Accounts from people near the sports grounds also underscored the public setting of the shooting. KTVU reported that a local resident described the parking lot as an area regularly filled with families and children on Saturdays. The sports grounds include recreational facilities used by the community.
Police said there were no outstanding suspects and no known threat to public safety after Zhang and Chen were taken into custody. The department has not announced that conclusion as a determination of what happened before the shooting, and the investigation remains active.
The arrests also begin a separate legal process from the police investigation. Zhang and Chen were arrested on suspicion of murder, but the allegations have not been proven in court. KTVU reported that they were scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday morning. Further details about the criminal case could emerge through court proceedings.
For detectives, major questions remain unresolved, including what preceded the shooting and what evidence may explain the violence between people police say were members of the same extended family. Authorities have not publicly offered an explanation for the shooting and have continued seeking information from people who may know more about the case.
Dublin Police Services said detectives are continuing to investigate McKinsey’s death and examine evidence. The department has asked people with information about the case to contact investigators as authorities work to establish the circumstances that led to the homicide.
