Providencia officials say the 19-year-old is out of serious condition as questions remain about why the wheel detached.
SANTIAGO, Chile — Municipal officials have identified the vehicle that lost a wheel before it struck and injured a 19-year-old student in Santiago, shifting attention from the dramatic surveillance footage to questions about how the wheel came loose.
Providencia Mayor Jaime Bellolio said the vehicle was found near the Los Leones underpass after the Oct. 29 accident on Avenida Los Leones. The wheel detached as the vehicle traveled through the area, moved through traffic and ultimately struck the student as he walked near the intersection with San Pío X. Officials have not publicly established the mechanical cause of the failure.
Bellolio said municipal authorities would make information about the identified vehicle available so the student could take any steps he considered appropriate. He also said the municipality was monitoring the young man’s recovery. The student was reported to have suffered multiple contusions but was out of serious condition.
The accident unfolded during the morning and was captured on surveillance video. Chilean reports said the loose wheel came into contact with other vehicles before being redirected toward the sidewalk. The student had no apparent opportunity to react before being struck from behind and knocked to the ground.
Bystanders quickly approached the injured student, and municipal personnel responded within minutes, according to Bellolio. Witnesses described the student as dazed after the collision. He was later taken to Clínica Santa María, where reports said he was treated for injuries to his forehead and chest that were not considered life-threatening.
The driver of the vehicle was located near the underpass. According to Chilean reporting, the driver told municipal personnel that the vehicle had recently been at a repair shop. That statement has not been shown to establish why the wheel detached or whether anyone involved in servicing the vehicle was responsible.
Bellolio likewise cautioned against drawing a conclusion from the video alone. He said authorities did not know whether the wheel separated because of maintenance problems, improperly secured components or another cause. The available surveillance images documented the wheel’s movement but did not determine what mechanical failure occurred before it entered the roadway.
That distinction leaves the central accountability question unresolved. The municipality has identified the vehicle, and the driver’s reported statement provides a potential line of inquiry, but publicly available information has not established negligence by the driver, a repair business or any other party.
The student remained out of serious condition in the latest reports reviewed, while officials had the vehicle information and surveillance footage connected to the accident. No final public determination of what caused the wheel to detach had been announced as of Sunday.
