Police are investigating after a car struck the 48-year-old worker as he gathered mail behind his parked postal vehicle.
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — A 48-year-old postal worker was critically injured after a car struck him while he was working his mail route in the Holmesburg section of Philadelphia, police said.
The crash happened shortly after 2:30 p.m. Sept. 3 near Ashburner and Walker streets in Northeast Philadelphia. Police said the worker was standing behind his parked postal vehicle and gathering mail when he was hit by a silver Honda sedan. He was taken to Jefferson Torresdale Hospital in critical condition.
Police said the Honda continued forward after striking the worker and then crashed into another parked vehicle. Surveillance video captured the collision, providing investigators with a record of the moments surrounding the crash.
The driver remained at the scene after the collision, police said. No charges had been filed as of the latest update. The Philadelphia Police Department’s Crash Investigation Division is handling the investigation, and authorities had not announced what may have caused the driver to strike the postal worker.
The worker was making deliveries on his regular route when the crash happened, according to people familiar with him. Residents said he was not using his usual postal vehicle that day. Authorities have not publicly identified him.
People who know the worker said his injuries were severe. He lost a leg and suffered serious facial injuries, according to sources cited by 6abc. Officials had not released additional information about his medical condition beyond describing him as critically injured.
The circumstances leading to the collision remain under investigation. Police had not publicly announced whether speed, distraction, impairment or another factor contributed to the crash, and no such cause has been established.
Investigators are continuing to review evidence from the Holmesburg crash, including available surveillance footage. The driver remained uncharged, while the postal worker continued receiving medical treatment following the collision.
