Online Sale Meetup Turns Deadly In Tustin Shooting

Police said Cristhian Cruz was shot during a meetup to sell a luxury item.

TUSTIN, Calif. β€” Two Riverside County men have been arrested after police said a 22-year-old Tustin man was fatally shot Sunday during a meeting arranged through an online sale.

Cristhian Cruz died after a shooting in the 13900 block of Tustin East Drive, where investigators said he had gone to sell a luxury item. The arrests came within a day, with one suspect booked on suspicion of murder and another booked on suspicion of robbery.

Tustin police said officers were sent to the area at about 7:25 p.m. Sunday after dispatchers received a report of a shooting. Officers found Cruz on the south side of Tustin East Drive with a gunshot wound. He was taken to Orange County Global Medical Center, where he later died. β€œThe investigation revealed the victim was attempting to sell a luxury item on an online site and agreed to meet at the location,” police said in a written statement.

Investigators said two men arrived to meet Cruz. During the transaction, a struggle broke out between Cruz and one of the men, police said. The second man then pulled out a firearm and shot Cruz, according to police. Both suspects fled before officers arrived. Police have not said what item Cruz was selling, how the meeting was arranged or whether the item was recovered.

Corona police found 20-year-old Amaree Devon Johnson later Sunday and arrested him without further incident, authorities said. Johnson was booked at the Orange County Jail on suspicion of murder. Tustin police arrested 19-year-old Aaron Cantreal Arterberry on Monday. Arterberry was booked on suspicion of robbery. Both men are from Corona, a Riverside County city about 25 miles from Tustin.

The shooting happened near Tustin East Drive and El Camino Real, an area with apartment buildings, parking lots and busy local roads. Police described the case as a robbery that grew out of an online sale meetup. The death added urgency to an investigation that began as a shots-fired call and quickly became a homicide case.

Detectives are still seeking people who may have seen or heard the shooting or who may have surveillance video from the area. Police named Detectives Svensson and Deleon as the investigators handling tips. Officials have not released a court date, charging decision by prosecutors or more details about the evidence linking each suspect to the shooting.

The case remained under investigation Thursday, with Johnson and Arterberry in custody and detectives reviewing witness accounts and possible video from the Tustin East Drive area.
